Paladin Tanking Stats at level 80

What is the best stat for a Paladin tank?

  • 1 Defense = 4.92 Defense Rating
First of all to become Crit Immune all tanks (with the exception of Druids) need 540 Defence.

It's not hard to hit 540 Defence with all the craftable Blacksmith gear available. Once you have done got Crit Proof it's time start building on your other stats. Or is it?

So Should I be stacking Dodge or Parry Gems?

The anwser: Neither.
Lets break it down:
  • 39.35 Dodge Rating = 1% Avoidance
  • 41.00 Defense Rating = 1% Avoidance
  • 49.18 Parry Rating = 1% Avoidance
So Dodge is the cheapest avoidance per rating stat to start building on, but lets not forget about Diminishing Returns!

OMG what are Diminishing Returns?
While Dodge Rating gives better avoidance then Parry Rating the more Dodge Rating you have, the more Dodge Rating it will take to make up 1% Avoidance but in the same way the more Parry Rating you have, the more Parry Rating it will take to make up 1% Avoidance. This works the same for Miss rating.

Lets look at Defence now:

4.92 Defense Rating = 0.04% Miss + 0.04% Dodge + 0.04% Parry + 0.04% Block

  • 41 Defense Rating = 1% Avoidance + 0.33% Block Chance
  • 41 Dodge Rating = 1.04% Avoidance

So the real question is Defence or Dodge?
Would you rather have 0.33% Block Chance or 0.04% Avoidance?

At the end of the day Defence is the best stat when directly compared with Dodge or Parry because of dirty dirty Diminishing Returns you will need to spread out your avoidance, that combined with the fact that block is far more useful then it used to be with most tanks stopping up to 1.5k damage per attack.
Also that extra block rating is is an exelent source of mana. :p
Oh yeah & Block Rating is not affected by Diminishing Returns!

Defense > Dodge > Parry

So now when your Protadin hits the golden (Crit Proof) 540 Defense start collecting... more defence!
Of course while you cant have too much avoidance don't forget that Stamina, Armor & +Hit are important stats for your Protection Paladin too!

Retribution & PvP

I had a few days free of raiding so I rolled Retribution and went for a run around the battlegrounds splatting people with my Claymore of Ancient Power
In most matches I was around 100,000 damage ahead of the rest of the battle!

In PvE I find Retribution slow paced and boring (in comparison to main tanking as protection) but in PvP it makes me happy. Retribution has evolved massively in comparison to how it used to be. People used to say lolRet & Retardin. Ah I have a guy on me! oh don't worry, it's just a Paladin. Nowdays I have most classes on the run. I will happily single handedly charge a group of 3 Horde if I have all my cooldowns (and provided that they aren't 3 Mages QQ).
Sadly even with all the abilities we have been give some people are still running around making us all look bad.

To play Retribution well in PvP everything needs to comes into play, you need to use so many abilities to stay ahead of the game:
Every Man for Himself, Repentance, Cleanse, Hammer of Wrath, Hammer of Justice, Judgement of Justice, Sacred Shield, Hand of Freedom, Hand of Protection, Flash of Light, Crusader Strike, Divine Storm, Consecration, Seal of Command, Divine Shield & Avenging Wrath. Did I miss something?

Utilizing all of these abilities is very very important& you need to consider cooldowns in all your situations. My favourite tactic is probably: *Berserker!* *Wings!* *Splat!* *Splat!* *Splat!* :p

Dann, Champion of the Frozen Wastes

With the defeat of Malygos (The Spellweaver's Downfall) Dann has become a Champion of the Frozen Wastes!

Heavy Metal Inc havent yet dipped there feet into the 25-man content due to issues with numbers that will soon be reolved, but for now I am satisfied, at least I have tanked and defeated everything WotLK has to offer.

Of all the fights Malygos is definitly the most challenging & the easiest was probably Sartharion with 0 dragons alive.

There are allot of complaints that the content is too easy, but given that this is entry level raiding I honestly cannot say that i'm disapointed. It's not as if it's all a complete pushover, I wouldn't dare to try and pug Horsemen or Sapphiron for instance.

More challenges to come in the near future i'm sure!

Also While I'm Posting crap about my progress:

Dann has now completed Higher Learning & The Coin Master

Useless but fun! Sad? Maybe a little. :p
